En lo que ha sido una temporada difícil hasta la fecha para el vigente campeón de EnduroGP, Andrea salió bien, aprovechando al máximo un problema técnico sufrido por Steve Holcombe (Beta Factory Racing), para dominar el barro y la lluvia y reclamar la victoria general. Holcombe ha sido segundo y se ha colocado líder del campeonato de EnduroGP, mientras que Hamish MacDonald (CH Racing Sherco) ha conseguido su primer podio en EnduroGP con un tercer puesto.

¡El campeón ha vuelto! Ha tardado en llegar, pero el vigente campeón de EnduroGP, Andrea Verona, ha conseguido por fin su primera victoria de la temporada en la segunda jornada de la quinta prueba del Campeonato del Mundo FIM de EnduroGP. Después de presionar duro ayer a Steve Holcombe (Beta Factory Racing), el piloto de GASGAS Factory Racing entró en acción cuando el sol fue sustituido por una lluvia torrencial y barro profundo. En lo que resultó ser un día físicamente exigente, la fuerte lluvia convirtió las condiciones en resbaladizas y muy impredecibles para todos. A veces, era cuestión de nadar o hundirse.

Verona vuelve a su mejor nivel

El italiano Andrea Verona, que en la primera jornada dio muestras del ritmo de antaño, parecía dispuesto a aumentar su impresionante velocidad en la segunda jornada en Gelnica. Hamish MacDonald (CH Racing Sherco) fue el más rápido en el primer Extreme Test, y Verona fue el más rápido en el Cross Test, dejando a los tres primeros, MacDonald, Holcombe y Verona, separados por sólo dos segundos.

Las pruebas Enduro Test y Cross Pro Enduro Test resultaron cruciales para ver quién ganaba ventaja antes de que las condiciones meteorológicas extremas empezaran a pasar factura. Holcombe estuvo a la altura de las circunstancias y ganó ambas pruebas. Se colocó en cabeza al comienzo de la segunda vuelta y mantuvo la ventaja, pero no por mucho.

En el segundo Extreme Test, Lorenzo Macoritto (Fantic) fue el que mejor dominó las condiciones. Tras un tiempo decepcionante, Holcombe recuperó la velocidad y ganó la Cross Test para ampliar su ventaja a 10 segundos. Pero justo cuando parecía que tenía el control, las tornas cambiaron rápidamente. Un problema técnico en el Enduro Test le hizo perder más de 30 segundos, lo que devolvió el liderato a Verona.

Al comenzar la última vuelta, Verona tenía 13 segundos de ventaja sobre un Holcombe que se recuperaba rápidamente. Al ganar el último Cross Test, Verona aumentó su ventaja a 20 segundos a falta de los dos Enduro Test. Con los dos pilotos persiguiendo la victoria, Verona se aferró a dos segundos para hacer el trabajo. A pesar de un esfuerzo heroico en las dos últimas especiales, Holcombe se quedó a las puertas de la victoria. Sin embargo, como segundo de Verona, Holcombe hizo lo suficiente para volver a casa desde Eslovaquia como nuevo líder de puntos de EnduroGP.

Debut de MacDonald en el podio de EnduroGP

MacDonald tuvo que luchar de cerca con el dúo de cabeza durante la primera mitad del día. Con un cómodo colchón sobre el pelotón perseguidor, el neozelandés consiguió su primer podio en EnduroGP. El sueco Mikael Persson (Husqvarna), que se desenvolvió con soltura en el terreno embarrado, ganó el último Extreme Test y se hizo con el cuarto puesto de la general, mientras que Jamie McCanney (Fast Eddy Racing) fue quinto.

El quinto puesto de McCanney en la general le permitió ganar la categoría Enduro1 por primera vez esta temporada. Josep García (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), que sigue arrastrando una lesión en el codo, se conformó con el segundo puesto, mientras que Theo Espinasse (Beta Oxmoto) completó el podio.

La victoria en Enduro2 fue para Verona, que se impuso a Holcombe y MacDonald. Con su segunda victoria del fin de semana en Enduro3, Mikael Persson se sitúa a cuatro puntos del líder del campeonato, Brad Freeman (Beta). Antoine Magain (Sherco) y Luc Fargier (Beta) fueron segundo y tercero respectivamente.
